Wisconsin Wrestling New Ruling
Willie Myers Inducted into Urbana High School Hall of FameMyers also coached the 1977 U.S. World University Games freestyle wrestling team that competed in Sofia, Bulgaria, and served as the team administrator for the 1979 World University Games team.
Respect for Myers among his peers has also led to the presidency of the NAIA (1978-1979, 1979-1980) and NCAA III (1985-87, 1989-91) wrestling coaches associations, as well as numerous positions on national tournament, ranking, wrestling rules and executive committees. Myers' retirement will end a four-year stint on the NCAA III wrestling committee.
In addition to the WWCA College Coach of the Year Award and the WIAC Motorelli Award, Myers has been feted two more for his wrestling accomplishments within the last year. In July of 2003 he received the Lifetime Service Award from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame "in recognition of years of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling". In November 2003 he was recognized at the WWCA's annual banquet for forty years of service to the sport.
When asked to name the highlights of his long career Myers paused for a long time while sorting through years of memories.
"One of my favorite moments was when Rob Llorca won his national championship at the NCAA meet in Ithaca, New York (1990), and he was so excited when he came off the mat he jumped to hug me and knocked me down." Myers remembered. "I think back to Randy Meyers (1989), who was totally blind, earning All-American honors, and maximizing his potential and providing such inspiration; and this year when Ross Babcock showed what people are capable of when they put their heart and soul into a task. Our first national champion, Fred Townsend (126 pounds, 1978) is hard to duplicate, and Wade Fletcher earned All-American honors the same year even though he competed with a very painful injury. And I think of Carmelo Flores, who came from the inner city of Chicago, earned All-American honors here (1978, 1979), and went on to represent Puerto Rico in the Olympics."
"I’m going to miss the interaction with the athletes," Myers noted. "Sitting in my office having a Twizzler (cherry licorice) with them, knowing that there is something that they need me for, to talk about. My door will be open at home, but it won’t be the same when they can just walk down the hall."
Myers listed his position as coach of the NAIA exchange team to Japan and Korea in 1980 as a career, and personal, highlight.
"In the early 60’s, while I was still competing in wrestling, my dream was to wrestle in the Olympics," Myers said. "The training and competition leading up to the 1964 Games, which were held in Tokyo, put such a strain on my family life that I made a decision to turn my attention to beginning a career and placing family first. Then, more than a decade later, I was honored to coach the first NAIA exchange team. That team competed in the same arena that the Olympics had used for wrestling, and it seemed like God was affirming that I could reach my goals, but in a different way."
Myers has also devoted years to developing young athletes and students.
At the time the teacher and coach in the Arlington Heights (IL) school district, Myers path led to Whitewater in the late 1960’s. Knowing that he needed a change in his life, after changing his goals from competitive wrestling, he looked for a way to use his master’s degree in counseling. He wrote to several colleges looking for a hall director’s position, and UW-Whitewater replied. He got the job, as hall director for Bigelow Hall, and moved to campus. During that era is wasn’t unusual for hall directors to have other assignments, so when he got to campus his wrestling background became known and it happened that Ed Schwager was giving up the head wrestling position to concentrate on other duties. It wasn’t too much longer before Myers met Forrest Perkins, UW-W’s head football coach from 1956-84, at a Lions club pancake breakfast, and Perkins asked Myers to help coach the freshman football team. Myers’ career path moved from hall director into student life, then serving as the administration as campus facilities planner. He left campus administration to take over for Perkins as chairman of the Department of Coaching, an academic of the unit, and has been based in Williams Center full-time ever since.
Myers time in athletics included fifteen years (1983-98) as the men’s director athletics, which included some turbulent years in intercollegiate athletics on the national scene.
Myers’ tenure at AD included the school’s first men’s national championships (basketball 1984 and 1989), planning for the remodeling of Williams Center and addition of the Kachel Fieldhouse, and planning and administering the program to meet gender equity mandates.
"Title IX was very prominent when I was AD", Myers said, "and was certainly one of the most difficult times in terms of doing what was right for all students. It was tough, but I think what carried us through was always looking at the result, what was the right thing to do."
"I’ve seen changes in athletics, but the biggest may be in terms of the funding and facilities available for all sports," said Myers. "Some schools believe in tiers of sports, making a name for the school with a couple of teams, but we don’t at UW-Whitewater. We treat each team in a fair and equitable way."
Myer’s 2003-2004 wrestling team capped the long string of achievements. The squad helped him earn his 300th dual meet victory (January 30 vs. Lawrence University). UW-Whitewater hosted the 2004 WIAC championship tournament, where four Warhawks earned league titles, and five wrestlers qualified for the NCAA III championship. Ross Babcock earned the Ben Peterson Award as the WIAC tourney’s outstanding wrestler, and Myers was named Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year for the fifth time. The Warhawks went on to finish thirteenth in the NCAA III championship, with Scott Karls and Babcock earning All-American honors. Karls, Tony Wright and Jeff Zastrow also earned Scholar All-American recognition.
Myers received his bachelor’s degree in industrial arts from Eastern Illinois University in 1964, and his master’s in guidance and counseling from the same school in 1966. He earned his doctorate in education administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977.
Currently, Willie Myers came out of retirement to serve as interim chairperson of the department of health, physical education, recreation, and coaching for 2006-2007

UW Oshkosh has been notified that the wrestling program may be dropped
I regret to inform you that the coaching staff at UW Oshkosh has been notified that the wrestling program may be dropped. The chancellor has accepted the recommendation of the Athletic Director and Assistant Chancellor to drop wrestling as part of a budget cutting effort. The chancellor will present this option to the rest of the chancellors in our athletic conference this Friday. At that meeting, the cut will be voted on by all the chancellors in the conference.
We are writing you because we would like you to know what the wrestling program offers to this University. We would also like to show what a low burden this program is to the University. Please read the following mission statement and an explanation of what is happening as the coaching staff sees it.
UW Oshkosh Wrestling Coaching Staff Mission:
We will strive to provide a deeper understanding of what this wrestling program means to the student athletes involved and the University. Specifically, we would like to address those encumbered with the task of making the decisions regarding athletic department budget cuts. This wrestling program is more important and beneficial than those who are not intimately familiar with it may know. We intend to assist in creating a solution that will maintain the current status of this University as a successful wrestling program. We offer the following statement as the foundation for our reasoning.
For the student athletes involved in our program, wrestling is not just about competition. These young men strive each day to improve themselves as individuals. For the coaches, helping them achieve this, is not just a job. Our devotion as coaches comes from the desire to see our athletes learn from wrestling the same thing that we did, character development.
The UWO Wrestling Coaching Staff,
Nick Matiash, Mike DeRoehn, Larry Marchionda
The Details:
Due to state budget cuts, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has deemed it necessary to cut 5% from the state funds in the athletic department budget. According to the athletic director Al Ackerman, this is a total of $81,000 over two years. A cut of 5% across the board is not an option. The athletic department state funds are the salaries of the athletic department staff. Almost all of these salaries are contracted for at least two years. The total staff salary for the wrestling program at UW Oshkosh is $8000. This contract is renewed yearly and therefore can be cut.
For $8000 dollars, the University is getting 3 full coaches. These coaches also receive help from additional coaches that volunteer to help out as much as they can. I, Nick Matiash, am the head coach, and the only paid coach. Last year's head coach Larry Marchionda, a very well respected name in wrestling, is volunteering extensive time. His 37 years of coaching experience have been critical in keeping this program going. The assistant coach, Mike DeRoehn, has also done incredible things for this program. We have taken the great young men we have had the pleasure to work with, and built a team that is now ranked 26th in the nation. This achievement provides UW Oshkosh with publicity they have never enjoyed before.
Coach DeRoehn is a highly undervalued benefit to the University. He moved here from Pennsylvania where he worked running wrestling clinics. Since the move he has been teaching during the day and coaching in the evenings. Besides coaching at the college level, he has built an amazing program for younger wrestlers. Coach DeRoehn runs clinics on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday nights. These clinics expose grade school through high school kids to UW Oshkosh. These kids get the valuable experience of training with a college caliber coach, and the University gets the exposure. News has been spreading, that DeRoehn's clinics at UW Oshkosh are the place for kids to learn wrestling.
Before Coach DeRoehn moved here, he was assured that the wrestling program was not in danger. Since then he has made a commitment to make coaching at UWO a career. DeRoehn has resigned from his current teaching position because he has decided that he could do the best job coaching UWO that way. Not teaching off campus will allow him to be around the wrestling office during the day. He will be available to give the UWO wrestlers more individual attention. He and I were planning on splitting the $8000 dollar salary as co-head coaches next year. With this $4000, and the money he raises with the clinics he has established, he would be able to support himself while he works on developing the UWO wrestling program.
All three coaches are willing to forfeit all of the coaching salary money (state funds). If it will save the program, they will run it without a coaching salary. They will still be able to provide equipment for the wrestlers through allocated funds. These are a separate class of funds that are not subject to these budget cuts. This may still not be enough.
According to the Al Ackerman, they almost did not need to drop wrestling. After planning some other cuts, they thought they might have cut enough. It was not enough however, and Al explained that they were still short by "8 or 9 thousand". When asked why the $8000 freed up by the coaches voluntarily giving up their salaries did not suffice Al explained further. If wrestling were dropped, the state funds would be cut by $8000. Furthermore, there would be no wrestling program to use allocated funds (supplied by tuition money). Al Ackerman told Larry Marchionda that the allocated funds for our program were $13000. Although this money does not fall under the cuts that need to be made, it is still of interest to the athletic department. The student body controls this money. The athletic department could convince the students to move it to other areas in the athletic department.
I am prepared to cite many examples of what the wrestling program means to the athletes involved. I can explain how wrestling can be used to bring out the best in people. However, the athletic department insists that they fully understand this. The decision to drop or keep wrestling is based on budget matters. As explained above, our allocated funds are $13,000 and our coaches' salary (from the state funds) is $8000. This is a total of $21,000. Athletic director Al Ackerman has told us that he figures the total cost of wrestling is $24,000, when he adds in postage and other expenses not allocated directly to us. Subtract the state funded salary of $8000 that we are willing to surrender and the total cost to the university is $16000 dollars.
If we maintain our current wrestling program at UWO it could cost the University $16,000. That represents a very slight burden to the University. It should also be recognized that we put money back into the University. One of the largest contributions we make is paying the athletic department a portion of our summer camp proceeds every year. This summer we contributed at least $4000. This money is generated by the wrestling program and covers administrative fees in the athletic department. This is normal for all sports camps, but the athletic department would be less $4000 without the wrestling team. The wrestling program also makes it possible for the University to host the massive high school wrestling tournament, "Oshkosh On the Water". This year Coach DeRoehn organized the UWO wrestlers and took care of other arrangements. The wrestlers set up and worked the tournament. The athletic department receives a direct payment from that tournament and makes money from the concessions. The wrestling program also receives $5000 for its own account from the tournament. At this time I do not know the amount the athletic department receives directly from the tournament, but the money they take in on concession is upwards of $5000. With the camp money, that is a minimum of $9000 that the University would lose if they cut the wrestling team. There are more examples. A lot of it is not big money, but neither is the cost of the program. This year, home meets brought in between $275 and $398 each. That is approximately $1300 this year. Alumni contributions will also suffer. Traditionally, alumni contributors that have been associated with wrestling programs do not continue to contribute to a school after it drops wrestling.
Wrestling clearly generates a minimum of $9000. This summer's camps are scheduled to be two thirds larger than last year. There is also the money coming in that I do not have exact figures on. If the University does not take in money by supporting this wrestling team, then it certainly comes close to breaking even.
Besides the financial issues, the wrestling program creates great exposure for the University. This Wednesday there were nearly 1000 people from around the state at UWO to watch a double high school wrestling meet we hosted. Many thousands more were at the "Oshkosh On The Water" tournament. We bring in young kids to train weekly and we create national exposure for UWO with our national ranking.
Our wrestling program is currently on the rise, and it is part of something bigger. Currently, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Wrestling Conference is a very strong conference. Out of the 7 teams, 5 of them are currently ranked in the top 30 in the nation. One of the teams that is not currently ranked, was ranked earlier this year and the other team finished 17th in the nation last year. The WIAC has recently gone through considerable trouble to add Lawrence to the conference. The purpose of this was to maintain NCAA recognition as a conference. If Oshkosh wrestling is dropped, it could hurt the WIAC and not just this University.
Having been notified only yesterday, that this cut was a possibility, these are the most facts we could gather. From our point of view, it seems like the University is getting a great benefit from the wrestling program. Understandably, they have to make cuts somewhere. However, wrestling does not have much to cut. The state funds that we do have are being offered up. The other money we use is supposedly not an issue in these cuts. Furthermore, the money we bring in can nearly offset the entire cost of the program, if not the whole thing. Finally, anyone involved in wrestling knows the value it adds to the athletes who participate.
Thank you for your concern,
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Wrestling Coaches
Time is of the essence. Please do your best to help however you can before the meeting of the chancellors this Friday. It is also important that you respect anyone you chose to address in this matter. Please express you concerns diplomatically no matter how upset you are. Finally, if you chose to write the chancellor, please do not send any email until after 10:00 Thursday. Otherwise my attempts to reach him may be lost in a mass of email.
