Former Urbandale wrestler, Brandon Patterson, killed in Army training exercise

Brandon Patterson, a 1994 graduate of Urbandale High School, Central Missouri State Mules wrestler from 1994-97, and paratrooper with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division, was killed last Thursday, August 27, when a military truck in which he was being transported rolled at Fort Bragg, N.C. Patterson was taking part in a training exercise at the time. He was 28.

Patterson had survived a tour of Army combat duty in Iraq, but died when he was pinned by the truck. He was being transported in a light-medium tactical vehicle assigned to the division's 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, a base spokesman said.

Twenty-five other paratroopers were hurt in the single-vehicle accident, two of whom had to be evacuated by helicopter for treatment.

Patterson was the son of Ken and Marge Patterson. After becoming Urbandale's first 100-match winner when he won a Class 3A district championship at 140 pounds and qualified for the state wrestling tournament, Patterson enrolled at Central Missouri State.

For the Mules, he posted a record of 19-29 in three seasons on the Mules varsity. He began his career for former head coach Mike Knight, and then wrestled his final two season for current Mules' mentor Robin Ersland.

"Brandon was a very good person," Ersland said. "I was excited to see him succeeding in life. "It's very disheartening to lose someone that young."

Former Wrestler Steve Blackford Killed in Automobile Accident -Three-time All-American competed at ASU from 1997-2001

Sept. 3, 2004

(From USA Wrestling) - http://thesundevils.collegesports.com/sports/m-wrestl/mtt/blackford_steve00.html

Steve Blackford, 27, a three-time NCAA All-American wrestler at Arizona State, was killed in an automobile accident in Colorado on Friday afternoon.

Blackford and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) were traveling on Eastbound I-76 14 miles East of Brush, Colo. when, according to Trooper Gilbert Mares of the Colorado State Patrol Accident Reconstruction Team, the jeep they were in rolled off the right shoulder of the highway. Blackford was ejected from the vehicle.

"We do not suspect that alcohol or drugs played a role in this accident," Mares stated.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, as well as all of their friends within wrestling," said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender. "We are also holding Sara in our hearts, hoping for her recovery from this tragic accident. Steve was a fine young man who was a great athlete and an impressive individual. It is a sad day for the wrestling community."

"The U.S. Olympic Committee extends its condolences to the Blackford family and we grieve with the entire wrestling community at this tragic hour," stated U.S. Olympic Committee Chief Executive Officer Jim Scherr.

McMann is reportedly in the Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan, Colo. Hospital officials could not disclose her condition.

Blackford was enrolled as law school student at Catholic Univ. of America in its Columbus Law School, located in Washington, D.C. McMann was moving from the U.S. Olympic Training Center to live in the Washington, D.C., area to be there with Blackford.

They had just returned from Athens, Greece, where McMann had won a silver medal at the 63 kg/138.75 lbs. division in women's freestyle wrestling.

McMann left Colorado Springs, Colo., this morning, joined up with Blackford and they were on their way to the Washington D.C. area at the time of the accident.

Blackford placed fourth in the 1999 NCAA Championships, third in the 2000 NCAA Championships and fifth in the 2001 NCAA Championships competing at 165 pounds for Arizona State. He was also a USA Wrestling FILA Junior National freestyle champion in 1997.

He is originally from Des Moines, Iowa, where he where he was a two-time Iowa state wrestling champion for Dowling High School.

Film Star Billy Baldwin, Fusili, Chapman and Simpson this week on Takedown Radio

The Unpredictable Season- Never in the course of wrestling history has so much been written and reported about this grand sport as there has been this season. The predictions at the beginning of the season have been thrown out the window if for no other reason other than they were, for the most part, incorrect. We are all trying to figure this out. D1 is certainly a division of change and parity. Hats off to all of the coaches that don't pay attention to polls but instead pay attention to the athletes. The sport is better for that reason. My thanks to Coach Al Bevilacqua (father of CSTV's Chris Bevilacqua) for the article he wrote in the latest edition of W.I.N. Magazine. I hope it raised some eyebrows.
If you have yet to read it, I encourage you to do so.
