University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Head Wrestling Coach Chris Bono has named senior wrestlers Michael Keefe and Matt Keller team captains

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Head Wrestling Coach Chris Bono has named senior wrestlers Michael Keefe and Matt Keller team captains for the upcoming season.

“Michael and Matt are two of the hardest-working guys on our team,” Bono said. “They are the type of wrestlers that I want to have in our program. One leads by example, the other is more vocal. They are both All-Americans and know how to win. Everyone on the team will benefit from their leadership.”

Keefe earned All-America honors in 2005; Keller this past season.

A native of Ringgold, Ga., Keefe placed third at 141 pounds last year at the Southern Conference Championships. He earned a wildcard entry to the NCAA Championships, making his third appearance at Nationals. Keefe placed fifth at the 2005 NCAAs to earn All-America accolades. He was the SoCon champion at 141 pounds his sophomore year.

Keller, a McDonald, Tenn., native, produced an outstanding season for the Mocs in his first year in the program in 2005-06. Keller was the Outstanding Wrestler at the SoCon Championships, winning the 133-pound division.

He finished eighth at the NCAAs, assuring himself of All-America honors and giving UTC two All-Americas in the last two years.

Keller registered a team-best 37-11 record with 12 pins, while Keefe was an impressive 36-11 with four pins.

The Mocs open competition with preseason matches at the Sunkist Duals Oct. 12-15 in Tempe, Ariz. The annual Blue-Gold match is Nov. 3.

Chris Bono Named UTC Head Wrestling Coach

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Former NCAA Wrestling Champion Chris Bono has been named Head Wrestling Coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Athletics Director Rick Hart announced Saturday.

Bono, an assistant for the Mocs last season, held the title of interim head coach after the May 8 departure of former Head Coach Joe Seay.

"This means the world to me," Bono said. "It has been a goal of mine to become a head coach since I got into the coaching profession. I plan on leading the team and representing UTC with integrity. We will work hard and work toward a national championship.

"I am extremely grateful to Rick Hart, the search committee and the University for this opportunity, and I will not let them down."

A member of the 2005-06 staff, Bono helped lead UTC to its 21st Southern Conference title and a 30th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Although new to his position as Athletics Director, Hart was heavily involved in the national search for the head coach, and said that Bono was a perfect fit to direct the tradition-rich program.

"We are excited to have Chris Bono as our head coach on a permanent basis," Hart said. "We are appreciative of his leadership during the transition between coaches and between athletics directors. We look forward to Chris continuing the outstanding tradition of UTC wrestling, and we are confident that he and his program will represent the University and the City of Chattanooga with the utmost class and competitive spirit."

Bono joined the UTC staff in 2005 after serving nine years as a wrestling assistant coach at national-power Iowa State. He worked for Head Coach Bobby Douglas and was the Cyclones' head assistant coach for the last five years.

During Bono's final year on the ISU staff, he helped direct the Cyclones to a 16-4 dual match record in 2004-05, a third-place finish in the Big 12 Conference and a sixth-place showing at the 2005 NCAA Championships.

A native of Gilbert, Iowa, Bono holds many coaching and competitive honors. He was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2002 for his role in ISU's success that season. The Cyclones compiled a 17-5 dual match record and were NCAA runner-ups with five wrestlers earning All-America status.

Bono, who lettered at Iowa State from 1994-97, ranks fifth on the program's all-time wins list with 130 victories. He won the NCAA 150-pound title as a junior.

A four-time NCAA participant, he placed fifth at the Nationals as a sophomore and second as a senior. As a freshman, he placed eighth at the Big Eight Conference Championships. He wrestled to a Big Eight Conference runner-up finish his sophomore year, won the Big Eight title as a junior and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the inaugural Big 12 Conference Championship in 1997. He registered a 41-11 record as a sophomore, went 37-4 as a junior and was 37-2 his senior season.

Bono's wrestling success did not come to a halt upon his graduation from Iowa State. During the summer of 2004 as a freestyle competitor, Bono defeated Doug Schwab, 5-4, to take third place at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2003, Bono won the 145.5-pound title at the U.S. Senior Freestyle National Championships in Las Vegas, qualifying for the World Team Trials in Indianapolis, Ind., where he was runner-up at that same weight. He was a U.S. World Cup team member, earning the gold medal at the 2003 World Cup Wrestling Championships in Boise, Idaho, and was a member of the national team at the 2003 Titan Games in San Jose, Calif.

Bono's freestyle accomplishments in 2002 led to a U.S. Senior Freestyle No. 1 national ranking at 145.5 pounds and a spot on the U.S. World Team. He began the year with a first-place showing at the Dave Schultz Memorial in Colorado Springs, Colo., followed by a fourth-place finish at the Kiev Grand Prix in Kiev, Ukraine. He won a bronze medal at the Pan American Championships in Caracara, Venezuela, and placed third at the U.S. Freestyle National Championships in Las Vegas, earning a berth to the World Team Trials.

At the 2002 World Team Trials, Bono swept through the mini-tournament beating Reggie Wright (Gator WC) of Colorado Springs, Colo., 3-1 and Schwab (Hawkeye WC) of Iowa City, Iowa, 3-2 to advance to the finals. In the 145.5-pound championship, Bono defeated Jamill Kelly (Gator WC) of Stillwater, Okla., 3-1 and 3-0, earning his second consecutive World Team Trials title.

In a special wrestle-off for the 145.5-pound spot on the 2002 U.S. World Team, Bono defeated Bill Zadick (Hawkeye WC) of Iowa City, Iowa, two matches to one, 2-3, 3-1, 3-2 OT, to earn his second consecutive trip to the World Championships. The U.S. World Team, however, did not compete at the World Championships in Tehran, Iran.

Bono also captured top honors at the 2004 NYAC Invitational with a victory in the finals over 2004 NCAA champion Jesse Jantzen, formerly of Harvard, and also earned a 66 kilogram title at the 20th annual Sunkist International Open with a win in the finals over former 2003 NCAA 149-pound champion and current Arizona State assistant coach Eric Larkin.

Bono competed at the 2005 World Championships in September in Budapest, Hungary. At the 2005 World Team Trials, Bono, the number one seed, captured the title at 66 kilograms by defeating Jared Lawrence two matches to none.

In May of 2006, Bono beat Japan's Kohei Fujimoto (1-0, 2-0), Uzbekistan's Muradollo Ablokulov (2-4, 1-0, 2-0) and Russia's Jirair Oganesyan (1-1, 5-4) at the Independence Cup Grand Prix in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He finished with the silver medal after losing 0-1, 2-1, 1-1 to Russia's Andrey Sementsov on a takedown with 14 seconds left in the final period. Sementsov is the reigning Junior European champion.

Bono earned his bachelor's degree in Exercise and Sports Science from Iowa State in 1997. He and his wife, Niki, have two daughters, Josie and Ellie.
UTC Head Wrestling Coach Announces His Resignation

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Head Wrestling Coach Joe Seay submitted his resignation to University officials Monday, Interim Athletics Director Matt Pope announced.

The resignation has been accepted, and Seayís official release date is June 5, 2006, Pope said.

ìMy wife and I feel that this is the best career move for us at this time,î Seay said. ìI am exploring an option that I am very interested in, and it is a job that I will consider very strongly. If it does not work out, we will pick a location, likely in the Midwest or back home on the West Coast, and will settle there.î

Seay was hired as the UTC head coach on May 19, 2005, replacing former Head Coach Terry Brands who left the program after three years to become Resident Coach at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Seay led the Mocs to the 2006 Southern Conference title this past season and was named SoCon Coach of the Year. He guided seven UTC wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, and the Mocs placed 30th overall.

ìWe appreciate Joe Seayís service to our wrestling program, the department and the University,î Pope said. ìWe wish him luck in his future endeavors.î

Pope has named UTC assistant wrestling coach Chris Bono interim head coach. A national search will begin soon for a replacement for Seay, and, Pope said, Bono will have to go through the search process as well should he be interested in pursuing the position.

Bono, a member of Seayís staff this past season, is an NCAA Champion from Iowa State who competed at the NCAAs four times. He served as an assistant coach at his alma mater for nine years prior to joining the Mocsí staff.

UTC Wrestlers Score Two Wins Saturday at Home

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Michael Keefe, Jake Yost and Israel Silva each won two matches Saturday for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team and led the Mocs to wins over University of the Cumberlands and Appalachian State.

The Mocs defeated the Patriots 26-11 and beat their Southern Conference rival, the Mountaineers, 29-5. Appalachian State, 8-7-1 and 1-3 in the SoCon, closed out the evening with a 26-22 win over the Cumberlands, now 6-3.

The Mocs, 13-7-1 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, won seven of 10 matches against the Mountaineers. After an ASU forfeit at 125 to start the dual, UTC's Matt Keller won his 12th consecutive match with a 6-3 decision over Terreyl Williams at 133.

A 23-7 Keefe technical fall over Marcus Cox gave UTC an early 14-0 advantage. Eric Burns got ASU on the scoreboard with a 6-3 win over Aaron Martin at 149. Yost won his second match of the day, defeating Scott Ervin 6-3 at 157.

Lee Roper's 5-4 win over Justin Otis in the 165-pound match ended the Mountaineers' scoring as the Mocs closed out the dual with consecutive wins by T.J. Sayers (174), John Davis (184), Lloyd Rogers (197) and Silva (285).

"We went out to try to improve upon what we did in the last match with Appalachian," UTC Head Coach Joe Seay said. "We wrestled well tonight, and we won some close matches. UTC and ASU tied 21-21 in a non-conference match on Nov. 13 at the Mat Jam Duals in Boone, N.C.

Yost scored a 9-1 major decision over The Cumberlands' Thomas Hutchinson at 157 pounds to clinch the earlier victory for the Mocs. His win pushed UTC's margin to 14-3 and proved to be too much for the Patriots to overcome.

After Delrico Choates edged UTC's Javier Maldonado 5-4 on a riding-time point in the first match of the night at 125 pounds, the Mocs reeled off five straight victories for a 17-3 lead. The string included wins by Adam Rains (133), Keefe (141), Martin (149), Yost and Daniel Peterson (165).

Kyle McKee pinned Edward Hernandez in the 184-pound match, and Silva earned a 3-1 overtime victory over Matt Bishop at 285.

The Mocs, 11-7-1 overall, won their SoCon opener Jan. 24 at The Citadel, 22-9. UTC and Appalachian are actually meeting for the second time this season. The two squads faced each other in a non-conference match Nov. 12 at the Mat Jam Duals in Boone, N.C. Each team claimed five matches, and the score remained tied, 21-21.

"Our earlier match with Appalachian State was very tight and competitive, UTC Head Coach Joe Seay said. "We expect much of the same Saturday. Our wrestlers understand the importance of leaving everything on the mat in our conference matches.

UTC is led by junior Matt Keller, who wrestles at 133 pounds. The McDonald, Tenn., native leads the team with a 28-7 overall record and is currently ranked as high as No. 7 nationally. He enters the dual with an 11-match win streak.

The Mountaineers are 7-6-1 overall and 1-2 in the SoCon.  ASU defeated VMI 24-10 but has lost to UNC Greensboro, 19-18, and to Davidson, 23-17. ASU has also scored victories this season over Duke, James Madison, East Stroudsburg and Gardner-Webb.

Mountaineer sophomore Scott Ervin, a 157-pounder, has yet to be defeated this season in 17 matches. Marcus Cox, a 141-pound junior, is 17-10 overall and was the SoCon Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 25. Neal Martin, a sophomore, leads the team in wins with a 23-11 mark at 174.

The College of the Cumberlands is an NAIA program from Williamsburg, Ky. The Patriots are 6-1 overall including a victory over Carson-Newman. Formerly Cumberland College, the squad placed second at the recent NAIA Duals, dropping a 22-14 match to Dana College in the finals.

Northern Iowa Hands UTC Wrestlers 19-18 Defeat; Mocs Blank Cumberland University

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Tyler Rhodes' 2-1 victory over Israel Silva in the heavyweight class lifted the University of Northern Iowa's wrestling team to a 19-18 victory over the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Saturday. Immediately following that dual, the Mocs dispensed of Cumberland University, 58-0.

Rhodes and Silva were tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, but Rhodes earned an extra point for riding time to claim the one-point victory. The Panthers, ranked No. 22 nationally, forfeited the next match at 125 pounds for the final margin.

Overall, UNI, now 3-7-1, claimed six of the 10 matches on the night, four of which were decided by one point.

"We lost four matches by one point," UTC Head Coach Joe Seay said. "Some of those could have gone either way. I thought we wrestled very solidly for most of the night. We had a chance to win the match, but we didn't pull them out. I told our guys afterwards, if they do that at the conference tournament, they won't go to Nationals. It's that simple."

The two nationally-ranked wrestlers lived up to their billing for each team. UTC's Matt Keller, ranked as high as No. 6 at 133 pounds, began the match with a pin of Chris Helgeson to give the Mocs a quick 6-0 lead. It was the 11th consecutive victory for Keller and his eighth pin of the season.

UNI's Nick Baima, ranked as high as No. 7 at 165 pounds, moved up to 174 for this match, and scored a 16-5 major decision over UTC's T.J. Sayers. Baima's win snapped a 9-9 tie and gave the Panthers the lead for good at 13-9.

Aaron Martin and John Davis were the other winners for the Mocs, now 11-7-1. Martin outpointed Colby Goetsch 9-6 at 149, and Davis defeated Dan Dunning 5-1 at 184.

The Panthers also earned team points from C.J. Ettelson, Chris Bitetto, Moza Fay and Andrew Anderson.

Ettelson edged Michael Keefe 9-8 at 141, Bitetto outscored Jake Yost 3-2 at 157, Fay was a 5-2 winner over Justin Otis and Anderson got past Lloyd Rogers 6-5 at 197.

In the Cumberland dual, the Bulldogs, an NAIA program, forfeited four matches. The Mocs used five pins and a major decision for the shutout. UTC claimed a 57-0 win over Cumberland last season.

Winning by fall for the Mocs were Martin (149), Wayne French (157), Kyle McKee (184), Zach Tramel (285) and Maldonado (125). Daniel Peterson scored a 16-6 major over Trey Myers at 165.

UTC hosts another twin dual next Saturday at Maclellan Gym. Appalachian State and Cumberland College will visit the UTC campus with the first match beginning at 7 p.m.

UTC Wrestlers at Home Saturday Against Northern Iowa; Cumberland University

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team will wrestle in its home opener Saturday in Maclellan Gym, hosting No. 22-ranked Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. and Cumberland University following the first dual.

The Mocs, 10-6-1 in dual matches this season, are coming off of a 22-9 victory at the Citadel Tuesday in the Southern Conference opener. In the convincing win over the Bulldogs, the Mocs claimed seven of 10 matches.

"We are very excited about wrestling at home," UTC Head Coach Joe Seay said. "Our coaching staff has heard about the supporters of UTC wrestling, and we are ready to see it firsthand for a regular-season match. It has been a long time for some of our guys to be back in Maclellan Gym. We are expecting a fun evening of wrestling."

UTC and Northern Iowa have met each of the last two years, with the Panthers recording 22-16 victories in both duals. In last year's match, the Mocs got a major decision from John Davis at 184 pounds and wins at 125 by Matt Pitts, 141 by Michael Keefe, 165 by Jon Sioredas and 285 by Wes Taylor.

UNI, ranked as high as No. 22 nationally this week, is 2-7 overall. However, each of its seven losses has come at the hands of teams ranked among the nation's top 12.

Junior Nick Baima highlights the Panthers' squad. The 165-pounder is currently ranked as high as No. 7 nationally with a 23-3 record and was named Outstanding Wrestler at this year's Midlands Championships in December.

The Mocs have a highly-ranked wrestler of their own. Junior Matt Keller is 27-7 overall with seven pins. The sixth-ranked wrestler has a 2005-06 resume which includes a 133-pound title at the Reno Tournament of Champions and an Outstanding Wrestler award at the Lone Star Duals. Keller, a native of McDonald, Tenn., who transferred from Nebraska prior to this season, has won 10 straight matches. He did not compete Tuesday at The Citadel because of a class conflict.

Cumberland is no stranger to the UTC campus. The Bulldogs, located in Lebanon, Tenn., suffered a 57-0 loss last year to the Mocs in Maclellan Gym. They faced Carson-Newman College Wednesday, dropping a 30-13 decision.

Seay will utilize two different lineups in the back-to-back duals. Javier Maldonado (125), Michael Keefe (141) and Aaron Martin (149) are expected to wrestle in each match. Seay said he may let Adam Rains wrestle at 133 versus Cumberland. Jake Yost and Wayne French will see action at 157, Justin Otis and Daniel Peterson will take the mat at 165, Davis and Kyle McKee at 184 and Israel Silva and Zach Tramel at heavyweight.

The Mocs will send either T.J. Sayers or Nick Davis to wrestle at 174 and either Lloyd Rogers or Nick Lorenzano at 197.

Tickets are $5.00 for both matches and can be purchased at the Maclellan Gym entrance.

Tennessee University at Chattanooga's Joe Seay Pleased With Blue-Gold Wrestle-Offs

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team opened up the 2005-06 schedule Friday night with its annual Blue-Gold wrestle-offs. Head Coach Joe Seay will use the intersquad matches to determine his team's depth as the regular season approaches.

"We will still adjust the lineup," Seay said. "We wanted to try to get them out in front of a crowd. It was good for them to compete as we get ready to open up the season at the Appalachian Duals. Then we have two weeks to get ready to go to Albany, N.Y.

"I was satisfied with what I saw tonight. I was not discouraged whatsoever."

The matches were close in the early going until T.J. Sayers and Nick Lorenzano registered the night's only pins. Sayers won by fall over Sean McAleney at 174 pounds, and Lorenzano pinned newcomer Kevin Pecor at 197.

Sean Cordell, a Cleveland, Tenn., native who transferred from West Virginia, started off the night with a 6-5 decision over Adam Rains at 125. Nebraska transfer Matt Keller got past two-time NCAA qualifier Josh Keefe at 131, 8-3.

Lloyd Rogers posted a 17-6 major decision over newcomer Ben O'Neill at 184, and Israel Silva closed out the event with a 4-2 win over Zach Tramel at 285.

Sayers' pin came at 59 seconds of the second period, while Lorenzano's recorded his pin 1:02 into the second period.

"I knew we would have some very tight matches in the lower weights," Seay said. "Some of our matches in the upper weights were a little lopsided, but we still had good, competitive matches."

The match was broadcast live around the world over the Internet on TakedownRadio.com.

The Mocs open the 2005-06 season Nov. 12 at the Appalachian Duals.

Three members of the UTC coaching staff are members of the USA Wrestling National Team, including Mocs' Head Coach Joe Seay, who is one of two U.S. Freestyle coaches.

Two new UTC assistant coaches, Chris Bono and Sammie Henson, are competing next week as members of the U.S. National Team in the freestyle tournament.

Bono is the top-ranked U.S. wrestler at 66 kilograms (145.5 pounds) while Henson ranks first at 55 kilograms (121 pounds).

Bono, an NCAA Champion from Iowa State, is a three-time U.S. World Team member, a two-time U.S. Nationals Champion and a 2003 World Cup Gold Medalist.

Henson is a graduate of Missouri who won two NCAA titles while competing for the Tigers. He is a 1998 World Champion, a 2000 Olympic Silver Medalist and a three-time U.S. Nationals Champion.

Seay was hired by UTC in May of this year to replace former Head Coach Terry Brands. Seay served as head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Team which produced three Gold Medal winners. He has led U.S. freestyle teams to World Team titles in 1993 and 1995. Prior to his arrival in Chattanooga, Seay won two NCAA team championships as the head coach at Oklahoma State and earned seven NCAA Division II National titles while the head coach at Cal State-Bakersfield.

The World Championships conclude Wednesday.

Chris Bono, a nine-year assistant wrestling coach at national-power Iowa State, has accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga,

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- Chris Bono, a nine-year assistant wrestling coach at national-power Iowa State, has accepted an assistant coaching position at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, UTC Head Coach Joey Seay announced Thursday.

Bono is expected to coach the Mocs' middleweight wrestlers.

A member of Head Coach Bobby Douglas' coaching staff since 1997, Bono has held the title of the Cyclones' head assistant coach for five years. He helped ISU to a 16-4 dual match record in 2004-05, a third-place finish in the Big 12 Conference and a sixth-place showing at the 2005 NCAA Championships.

Bono is currently preparing to compete at the 2005 World Championships which will take place Sept. 26 in Budapest, Hungary. At the 2005 World Team Trials, Bono, the number one seed, captured the title at 66 kilograms by defeating Jared Lawrence two matches to none. Seay is the head coach of the United States team.

"I am thrilled that he has decided to take this position," Seay said. "He is another quality individual for our program and gives us, in my opinion, the best staff in the country. You have to have the right people in the right places. These guys will make this thing happen and will certainly help in our nationwide recruiting efforts."

Bono joins Steve Hamilton, Sammie Henson and Leonce Crump as members of Seay's first staff at UTC.

During the summer of 2004 as a freestyle competitor, Bono decisioned Doug Schwab, 5-4, to take third place at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2003, Bono won the 145.5-pound title at the U.S. Senior Freestyle National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, qualifying for the World Team Trials in Indianapolis, Ind., where he was runner-up at that same weight. He was a U.S. World Cup team member, earning the gold medal at the 2003 World Cup Wrestling Championships in Boise, Idaho, and was a member of the national team at the 2003 Titan Games in San Jose, Calif.

Bono's freestyle accomplishments in 2002 led to a No.1 U.S. Senior Freestyle national ranking at 145.5 pounds and a spot on the U.S. Freestyle National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, earning a berth to the World Team Trials.

Joe Seay Named UTC Head Wrestling Coach

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is replacing the 2005 Southern Conference Wrestling Coach of the Year with a five-time National Collegiate Coach of the Year and a nine-time NCAA National Championship coach.

Joe Seay (pronounced SEE) has accepted the position of Head Wrestling Coach at UTC, Athletics Director Steve Sloan announced Thursday. Seay takes over the program from former Head Coach Terry Brands. Brands resigned his position April 4 of this year to become the Resident Coach at the United States Olympic Training Center.

Seay, who currently resides in Earlysville, Va., directed Cal State-Bakersfield to seven NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships and guided Oklahoma State to two Division I National titles.

Brands led the Mocs to the 2005 SoCon Championship and a 21st place finish at this year's NCAAs.

"Coach Seay is a world-class coach," Sloan said. "He brings experience, expertise, connections and a life-long commitment to the sport of wrestling."

Seay's collegiate coaching career began in 1972 at Cal State-Bakersfield, and he compiled a 187-55-2 record from 1972-84. He led the Roadrunners to NCAA Division II National titles in 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1983. He coached six Division I champions, 24 DII champions and 70 DII All-Americas and was a three-time NCAA DII Coach of the Year.

Seay, the only wrestling coach to win NCAA titles on both the Division I and II levels, moved on to the nationally-prominent program at Oklahoma State, earning a 114-18-2 coaching record from 1984-1992. He took the Cowboys to National Championships in 1989 and 1990, won six consecutive Big 8 Conference Wrestling titles and earned NCAA DI Coach of the Year accolades twice.

"I am very excited about becoming the head coach at UTC," Seay said. "Terry Brands did a very good job here. He got the ball rolling, and we plan on taking it to a higher level.

"I have not been coaching at the university level for some time, and I'd like to finish up my career here. I like UTC's commitment to the program. We will do our very best to continue taking it to a higher level. Every place that I have been a head coach, I have won a national title. That is our goal here."

Seay has served as the head coach of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club since 1978 and has produced the National Freestyle Championship squad for 22 straight years. He has been a USA Wrestling National staff member since 1984, served as the U.S. Olympic Head Coach in 1996 for the Gold Medal-winning team and has been selected to coach the 2005 USA Wrestling World Team which will compete at the end of September in Budapest, Hungary.

Interestingly, Seay coached Brands to the World Freestyle Championship in 1993 and 1995.

He worked as coach of the University of Oklahoma's Freestyle Club, the Underdog Wrestling Club, for six years, and as coach of the University of Virginia's Freestyle Club, the Charlottesville Wrestling Club, since 2003.

He is a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, the California Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Kansas Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Seay graduated from Wellington High School in Wellington, Kansas. He earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Biological Science in 1963 from Kansas State and a master's degree in 1964 from KSU in P.E. and School Administration. He was a 20-year resident of Bakersfield, Calif.

UTC Wrestling Has National Rep

From reports across the nation, the wrestling coaching job at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has become a plum.

"Chattanooga represents a tremendous opportunity for a coach to build a perennial top-10 program," said David Noblit, head of the school's search committee and a former Mocs wrestler. "This could be one of the top mid-major programs in the country."

Terry Brands, who resigned in April after three seasons to become resident coach at the United States Olympic Training Center, took UTC to a 21st-place21 st - place st-place finish in the 2005 NCAA wrestling tournament.

The last of four finalists to succeed him, UTC assistant Steve Hamilton, is scheduled to interview today. Edinboro (Pa.) assistant Lou Rosselli interviewed Thursday. Former Oklahoma State coach Joe Seay and Iowa State assistant head coach Chris Bono interviewed last week.

"They're going in the right direction. Things are really up and running, and people are excited. They can have a lot of success," Rosselli said before his talks.

"Coach Brands and Coach Hamilton have done a really good job," said Seay, who won two NCAA championships at Oklahoma State. "There's a lot of interest in Chattanooga right now. They have a chance to do something special. There is a chance for somebody to take what they've done to a higher scale."

Hamilton isn't surprised that UTC has drawn interest from nationally recognized coaches.

"They see the writing on the wall," he said. "We may be the outpost of college wrestling, but this is a great base from which to recruit. We're the southernmost Division I wrestling program. The state of Florida recently won the national Greco duals and finished in the top five in the national freestyle. Wrestling in Georgia is starting to take off, and Tennessee always produces Division I signees."

Brands' reputation has clearly helped the program's.

"These coaches know that the work ethic is already instilled," Hamilton said. "They will already have guys here who want to win and will work. The work ethic is already legendary. The guys are up working at 4:30 a.m. because they see it as a way to separate themselves from others. They know other teams aren't doing it."

The Mocs' ascent has been monitored throughout the country.

"It's amazing. Terry took that program and turned every one of those kids into competitors," Bono said. "In other years you'd hope to get a guy from Tennessee-Chattanooga (in the NCAA tournament). Now it's a bad draw."

Many believe UTC's wrestling potential has just barely been tapped.

"That's what we are hearing," said Jeff Rufolo, a former UTC wrestler and a member of the school's search committee. "People saw what Terry did, and that he did it in a short time frame. They feel they can continue the momentum."
