Wildcats Rally Back to Defeat Boxers in Opener, 21-20
CWU Overcomes 11-0 Wrestling Deficit, Roberts Provides Winning Points

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Sophomore Luke Roberts (Spokane, Wash./West Valley
HS) picked up an escape point early in the third period of his
heavyweight bout, capping Central Washington's come-from-behind
wrestling victory over Pacific University, 21-20, in the 2003-04 season
opener for both schools on Friday night at Nicholson Pavilion.

Roberts, grappling with Steve Serratos in the final bout of the night,
emerged with the only point scored in-play after the two battled to a
scoreless draw through the first two periods. Roberts then earned an
escape, and eventually added on to his winning margin by virtue of a
riding time of greater than one minute as the match expired.

Central Washington (1-0) started out with an 11-0 deficit against the
Boxers (0-1) in the meet, as Pacific earned victories in each of the
first three weight classes. In a battle of collegiate debuts, Kevin
Spangler of Pacific won the opener at 125 pounds by defeating
Central's Jon Garcia (Oak Harbor, Wash.) by major decision, 15-4,
and Aaron Hernandez claimed a second major decision against CWU
sophomore Jeff Brown (Richland, Wash.), 13-3, at 133 pounds. In a
hard-fought dual at 141 pounds, Pacific's Garrett Miyake made it three
wins in as many starts for the Boxers by squeaking past Bryan Caraway
(Goldendale, Wash.) with a 6-5 decision.

The Wildcats' comeback started in the following bout, however, as
freshman Jeff Nimrick (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula HS) outscored Jason
Smith 14-4 in the first period on his way to an impressive 19-4
technical fall victory that put Central Washington on the scoreboard at
11-5. Josh Wiebenga (Enumclaw, Wash.) followed up with another
dominating win at 157, pinning Lucas Nakao with 1:18 to go in the third
period and tying the dual score at 11 apiece.

CWU took its first lead of the night after the 165-pound bout, in which
sophomore Steve Hadsel (Tacoma, Wash./Franklin Pierce HS) used
back-to-back escapes late in the second period and early in the third to
emerge with a 4-3 win over Cory VanSteenwyk.

Pacific responded, however, with consecutive decisions at 174 and 184
pounds, as Mick Davis dominated CWU redshirt freshman Kyle Nickerson
(Benton City, Wash./Kiona-Benton HS) with a pin at 2:33 of the first
period, putting the Boxers ahead 17-14 with three weight classes
remaining. Ryan Jones, ranked eighth nationally in the pre-season NCAA
Division III poll at 184 pounds, lived up to his ranking by earning a
6-0 shutout win over Central's Josh Brock (Washougal, Wash.).

With a six-point deficit on the scoreboard, junior co-captain D.C.
Hazen (Arlington, Wash.) started the comeback down the stretch by
posting a 10-2 major decision win over Judd Vincent, earning the crucial
tenth point with riding time remaining in the contest. Then trailing by
just two points, Roberts eeked out his tallies and helped Central
Washington win its season opener and the collegiate coaching debut for
Jeremy Zender.

The Wildcats, ranked 19th in the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches'
Association's pre-season poll, will next compete on Sunday, Nov. 16,
at the Pacific Senior Open in Forest Grove, Ore. Central Washington's
next home dual will not come until Jan. 23, 2004, when it hosts
perennial NAIA power Simon Fraser.
