Apprentice School coach Bruce Shumaker, in his second season with the program, sees plenty of local interest upcoming for the nationals. "This is a big plus having nationals here in the area," he said. "Even though we are going to be very young, we do have numerous wrestlers from this area so this is definitely a great way to end the season."
NCWA executive Director Jim Giunta was happy to announce the nationals coming to Hampton. "We are excited to be in Virginia this year for the Nationals and in particular to be working with the City of Hampton and The Apprentice School," he said. "We looked at numerous cities this past year in an effort to find the best combination of facilities, wrestling fan base, host city support and proximity to NCWA institutions. Upon complete review by the tournament committee, Hampton emerged as the overwhelming best choice." said Giunta.
Kris Smith, from the City of Hampton Convention and Visitor's Bureau, visited the 2008 NCWA Nationals in Lakeland, Florida and was key in spearheading the effort with Hampton and The Apprentice School to host the event in March. Seniors Justin Gilliard (8-7 at 165) and Eric Lybarger (pin in 1:41 at 174) set up Robinson to take a 20-5 technical fall victory at 184 pounds to give the Builders an insurmountable 29-9 advantage.
In the opener against Wilkes, Robinson's victory was the lone points in a 45-3 loss to the 27th-ranked Colonels. In the match against 15th-ranked York, the hosts won the first five bouts before the trip of Gilliard (8-4 at 165), Lybarger (14-1 at 174) and Robinson (10-4 at 184) gave the Builders their points against the Spartans.

Apprentice School Eliminated at VA Duals 22-20 by Wagner
The Apprentice School advanced to the second day of the Virginia Duals for the second year in a row, but this time they were not as fortunate as last season.
The Builders were eliminated from the event with a hard fought 22-20 loss to Wagner College. Apprentice School had more bout victories in this match (6-4) but three of the four defeats were by pin which provided the bonus points needed for the win.
Sophomore Kevin Hill opened the match for the Builders recording a 13-7 decision over Nicholas Keshecki and freshman Justin Olanowski earned a 19-1 tech fall victory over Joe Eurell to put the Builders ahead 8-0.
Sophomore Matt Perry's 10-5 victory at 149 pounds put the Builders up 11-5 heading into the middleweights. After a loss at 157, seniors Justin Gilliard (10-7 at 165 pounds) and Eric Lybarger (5-3 at 174) put Apprentice School ahead 17-10 heading into the final three bouts.
Wagner received a forfeit at 184 and recorded a win by pin at heavyweight to take the 22-20 win. In between that was a 7-2 victory for Kendall Ridenour at 197 pounds that gave the Builders a shot into the heavyweight match as they held a 17-16 advantage.
In the semifinals, the Builders fell 49-0 to NCAA Division II 10th-ranked Newberry College.
Next up for the Builders will be a tri-match at York College in Pennsylvania next Saturday starting at noon.

Apprentice School Advances in Day One of Virginia Duals
With a flair for the dramatic, the Apprentice School recorded another first round advancement in the 28th annual Virginia Duals.
The Builders opened the event with a 28-27 victory against Millersville University. The deciding point came from the second criteria in winning the most six-point bouts. This marks the second straight year the Builders opened with a win over a NCAA Division I program as they opened the 2007 event with a 35-13 win over Davidson College.
Sophomore Kevin Hill opened the match for the Builders with a win by pin in 47 seconds over John Andel and freshman Justin Olanowski earned a win by forfeit at 133 pounds to give the Builders a 12-0 lead after the first two bouts.
Millersville responded with victories in the next three bouts, with two by pin and a tech fall to take a 17-12 advantage after 157 pounds.
Senior Justin Gilliard put the Builders back into the match with a 5-2 decision at 165 pounds to cut the deficit to 17-15. Fellow senior Eric Lybarger followed with a win by pin in 2:22 over Jeremy Brooks at 174 pounds to give the Builders a 21-17 advantage. The Marauders, a NCAA Division I program in Pennsylvania, got victories at 184 by pin and 197 by a major decision to take a 27-21 lead heading into heavyweight.
Freshman Josh Seal stepped out for the Builders and got his hand raised in victory as Millersville didn't have a heavyweight wrestler which ended the dual match 27-27. The first tie-breaking criteria was most victories which each team had five. The next criteria was the most six-point victories, which included pin, forfeit or disqualification. Apprentice School edged Millersville 4-3 in that category to earn the victory.
That victory puts the Builders into a 2 pm semifinal on Saturday against the 9th-ranked NCAA Division II program in Newberry College. The Indians and the Builders do have some common ground as Newberry started its program in the 2004-05 season and participated in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association before going full NCAA Division II the following season. Newberry, the top-seeded team in the American College Division, defeated McDaniel College 53-0 in its opening match.

Apprentice School Names Bruce Shumaker Head Wrestling Coach
NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Bruce Shumaker, long-time high school wrestling
coach across the Peninsula, was named today as the Head Wrestling Coach
at The Apprentice School by Director of Athletics Bill Casto. Shumaker
comes to the Builders after serving as the coach at Lafayette High
School since 1998.
"I'm excited to have Bruce join our coaching staff," said Casto.
"His experience and history of success makes him a great addition to our
program. Bruce's credibility in high school wrestling across this state
will greatly enhance our recruiting efforts."
Shumaker graduated from Edinboro University where he was a
walk-on with the wrestling program who progressed to earning a partial
scholarship by the end of his first season. He won over 70% of his
collegiate bouts in his four-years and participated in two Olympic
Trials.
His first area stop was at Denbigh High School from 1974-80
before heading to Lexington, VA for a season as an Assistant Coach at
Virginia Military Institute and six years at Natural Bridge High School.
At Natural Bridge, he coached 10 individual state champions and 12
place-winners from 1981-87.
He returned to the Peninsula in 1989 to coach at Mathews High
School where his teams compiled a 118-48 dual match record. His Blue
Devil teams won five regional and two state titles, while placing in the
top three four times. At Mathews he won his first of two Virginia State
Wrestling Coach of the Year honors.
Since 1998 he has been the coach at Lafayette High School in
Williamsburg. In that time his teams have been 184-41 in dual meets and
have won three Bay Rivers District Dual Meet titles. The Rams have won
three Region I titles and have been runner-ups five times. In the
Virginia Group AA Tournament the Rams have been in the top 10 seven
times in nine years including two fourth-place finishes.
Former Daily Press wrestling reporter, now Director of Media
Relations for the National Wrestling Coaches Association, Jason Bryant,
had nothing but praises for Shumaker and his return to collegiate
coaching. "Having grown up in Hampton Roads and knowing Bruce Shumaker
on both a personal and professional level, I think the Apprentice School
is making a sound choice," said Bryant who is also the lead wrestling
writer and webmaster for Intermatwrestle.com. "Bruce is loyal to the
area, a solid technical coach, holds a great knowledge of the sport of
wrestling and is one of the most respected coaches in the state and
country."
Shumaker looks to hit the ground running with the Builders. "I
feel very fortunate to be the new coach of the Apprentice School. This
is a serious wrestling program and there will be a new challenge every
week," he said. "Our first priority will be to continue the success of
the Builder's wrestling and then to make a connection with some of the
local talent."

Apprentice
School November Wrestling Recap
The Apprentice School wrestling team has started their 2005-06
season
with strong showings in
three tournaments. They opened in
the
Knight
Brawl duals on November 4 and came
away 0-3 but feeling good after
decent showings against NCWA powers Pensacola Christian College,
the
host Central Florida squad and California Junior College Dual
Champions
Sierra Community College. Junior Eric Lybarger (Camby,
Ind./Mooresville) came away 3-0 on the night to lead
the Builders.
The next day the Builders came in third out of 12 in the Central
Florida
Open. Junior Rudy Leming (Fernandina Beach, Fla./Fernandina Beach)
went
4-0 at 174 pounds to win that title. Two Builders finished second
as
freshman Jeff Weeks (Fort Defiance, Va./Fort Defiance) went 3-1
at 125
pounds and sophomore Jon Glavin (Roseville, Ca./Oakwood) went
2-1 at 141
pounds. Freshman Micah Amrozowicz (Va. Beach, Va./Kellam) went
3-1 at
133 for third place, while three others took
fourth place at
their
weights.
The weekend of November 11-12, the
Builders participated in the
25th
annual UNCP Braves Open and came out with three placers. Amrozowicz
continued his torrid start going 6-1 to take third at 133. Sophomore
Brad Glavin (Roseville, Ca./Woodcreek) was 4-2 at 149 pounds for
a
fourth place finish. Leming went 5-3 at 174
pounds to come in
sixth
place.
This week the Builders went back to Pembroke, NC for a dual with
the
Braves on Wednesday and lost 26-12. After trailing 13-0 early,
the
Builders rallied with wins by Cecil Lee (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland)
at
heavyweight by decision, a pinfall win from Amrozowicz at 133
pounds and
a decision by Jon Glavin at 141 pounds to cut the lead to 16-12.
From
then, the Braves won the last three matches via decision for the
26-12
win.
Last
weekend, the
Builders participated in the 39th annual East
Stroudsburg Open in
Pennsylvania and fared very well against Top
25 NCAA
Division I competition. Leming went 3-2 at 165 pounds and was
one bout
away from placing in the tournament. Lee was 2-2 at heavyweight,
Amrozowicz was 2-2 at 133 pounds and Reuben Russell (Toledo,
Oh./Phoebus) was 2-2 at 157
pounds.
The Builders are off this week before participating in the Maryville,
Tenn. Duals on December 3.
Apprentice
School twins double up on mat
RICHARDSON, Texas ñ Where one goes, the other will follow.
It has always been that way for the Glavine twins, Brad and Jon, who come from just outside of Sacramento, Calif.
ìWe worked at all the same places,î Brad said. ìWe worked at McDonaldís, we worked at the grocery store, we live together, and now we work here.î
ìHereî is at the Apprentice School in Newport, Va., where both are freshmen and work as welders on the aircraft carrier George H.W. Bush. But they also both compete on the Apprentice Schoolís wrestling team, and both earned the title of All-American last weekend at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association championships at the University of Texas at Dallas Saturday.
ìItís great having both of them on the team,î Head Coach Jeff Rusak said. ìThey both have a great work ethic ñ theyíre both very hard workers ñ and that helps the other guys on the team. If one wins, it makes the other one want to win that much more.î
Brad placed fourth at 141 pounds and Jon took third place at 133 pounds at the national tournament. Jon won over Beau Tillman of Kansas State by fall in a mere 42 seconds to win third place, but Brad, wrestling for third place, lost a close 3-2 decision to Tony Washington of Newberry, and opponent he defeated earlier in the season.
ìI lost my first match and had to come all the way back to take third,î Jon said. I lost to the eventual 133-pound champ (Brendan Byrne of Blair Academy) and I gave him his best match (Byrne won by fall in 1:58). Itís all about peaking at the right time, and I did.î
Often, one of the twins believes his performance on the mat will mirror that of the other.
ìI do what Jon does,î Brad said. ìIf he does well, I feel like I did well. I feel like we can push each other.î
The Glavinsí third and fourth place finishes were big contributors to earning third place for the Apprentice School in the team standings with 111.5 points, behind only the University of Central Florida (171) and Grand Valley State University (159).
The Glavinsí mother, Lori, made the trip from Sacramento to Richardson, Texas, last weekend to watch her sons wrestle in the national championships. It was the first time she had seen her sons wrestle in college.
ìShe never missed a high school tournament,î Jon said. ìThis is the first time sheís been able to attend a college tournament, and she couldnít have picked a better one. I hope sheís as proud of us as we are of her.î
It turned out Jonís hope was right on the money.
ìItís very exciting to see them succeed past high school,î Lori Glavin said. ìTheyíve done wonderfully. Iím just glad I could be a part of it. Theyíre great athletes, and weíve been blessed.î
The Glavins have three more years of wrestling at the Apprentice School ahead of them. The only ones that are not looking forward to that are their mat opponents.
